After having struggled with my Love/Hate relationship HP dv6000 for nearly 3 years, Vista finally got the better of it, forcing me to use it as my back-up Linux/Ubuntu laptop. While looking for replacing my laptop, I was finally down to XPS 15 and the Macbook Pro. Though I would have liked to wait for Sandy Bridge, I finally went with the XPS 15. Those of you that are concerned about shipping times, I received mine(incl. of customizations) within 5 business days. Though more on the bulky side, the speakers on this system makes it entirely worth it. Furthermore, this is by far the best keyboard I have used on a laptop in a long time. The trackpad unlike most laptops is large, easy to navigate and multi-touch. Graphics - SUPERB; I would recommend getting the Blu-Ray drive, because the resolution on this laptop actually rivals a standard HDTV. Processor - got the i7 740 - Windows never felt so smooth while running 6 instances and a rendering at the same time. I could go on, but I'd rather use this laptop. VERDICT - Want to buy a GREAT laptop for half the average cost for laptops in its class - GET THIS!

This laptop has been just good to me since I got it out of the box. It handles all my tasks efficiently and never stops working. I sometimes leave processes open which use a lot of ram (such as video games) and forget I even have it open while doing other things. Doesn't crash, the battery life is pretty good if you use it on energy saver, and I would have to say this is one of the best windows computer on the market

XPS is a gr8 series, good for performance. I use laptops very roughly and I am glad this product isnt sensitive. I keep it powered on for weeks, speed remains gr8. Never halts, nor does it have ANY sort of sound. Good for movies, games, and for normal day to day work. Drawbacks: 1. Left side heats up a little more than it should (because of fan) 2. Overweight Key features 1. Excellent sound 2. Speed is awesome 3. Display is good 4. Battery life is good 5. Keyboard is user friendly

Base specs with the only changes being the back-lit keyboard and the 9 cell battery. Received 2 weeks ago. Pros: -Plain design: The outside can look plain but I tend to enjoy simpler designs better. I really like the inner black portions. It looks clean and well designed and let's face it, we'll be staring at the inside more anyway. -USB ports: I think they're very well thought out in placement. There's one on the left and right sides of the laptop near the screen and one on the back on the left hand corner. The two ports on the side can be used for either left/right handed mice. Granted, many use wireless mice but well placed for either orientation. The ports are in the exact same location on either side so it's easy to find. This laptop can get warm so I always have the back one plugged into a cooling fan. -Webcam: Apparently, my video is very clean and crisp now. First person to receive video chat went "WOAH...it's so clean..." -Keyboard: Back lit keyboard is very nice and feels nice to use. -Speakers: Didn't think much of their lofty claims but this REALLY blew me away. I was seriously surprised at how crisp and loud everything was. -Screen: I don't have the 1080p screen but I still found everything very sharp and clean. So much so that I had to figure out why I kept getting headaches. Turned out the screen was so bright that it gave me headaches. Didn't realize I was squinting all the time either from the brightness. I keep it around 30% of what it can do and it's fine for me now. -9 cell battery: Vertical battery really does help making cooling easier and raises the keyboard for easier typing. It does make stowing in a bag a little annoying. -Speed: With video Skype, Restaurant City on Facebook, and Starcraft 2 in window mode, the laptop switches over nicely. Only games I tested so far are Starcraft (colors glitch a little unfortunately), Starcraft 2, and L4D 1&2 which ran flawlessly. Cons: -Webcam on light: The little light next to your webcam to indicate that it's currently in operation is this little white dot. It's extremely annoying because it feels like it's shooting a small beam at you (like a car behind you with bright headlights flashing into your side view mirrors). I also honestly thought that the paint had chipped. -Headphone/mic port: Placed next to the right side USB port. Feels out of the way and certainly needs a longer wired headphone to reach. A few other notes: -The fan is not always on. Granted if you're gaming or doing anything really, it will turn on. However, it's not really as loud as some claim them to be. I hardly notice it. -The left side of the laptop can get warm but I always have my cooling pad running so it barely gets warmer than the right side even when gaming. All in all, this laptop is excellent and far exceeded my expectations.

I am a programmer(server appllications with java, ruby, ,net) and my review is primarily for programmers. I got the xps just yesterday. my specs: 1. core i7 quad 2nd generation 2.2 GHz. 2.0 Ghz is cheaper and i reccommend that over my 2.2 which is expensive. 2. 8 GB ram. 3. Blue ray writer. 4. 640 GB 7200 rpm hdd. Wish I could afford the SSD. 5. Full HD screen. A MUST. 6. Back lit keyboard - strongly reccommended. 7. The other specs should not matter. The full HD(1900*1080) display is a must. Thats where the XPS 15 (L502x) stands out. The JBL speakers are very good but playing movies and audio is a low priority to me. DO NOT get the default 1300*768, you will regret it as a programmer. One down side is the software. There is a lot of bloatware (1.6 GB is the overall memory footprit with none of your dev apps/tools running) you would want to get rid of. I am planning on getting windows 7 prof and doing a clean install. I will setup a ubuntu dual boot. I am very impressed with the asthetics of the xps. DO NOT get the 9 cell battery unless you really need it. The xps is on the bulky side and the 9 cell would make it even more so. I reccomend getting an additional battery if u need extra time. The 6 cell battery gives me a little over 2 hrs. The xps performs very well. I have many apps and a few servers running and the xps is still very responsive.

If you don't need USB3.0 port, this laptop will be nice laptop to buy. It has high possibility of getting initial failure at USB3.0 port. There are tons of people have same problem at forum, but it had not been solved till now. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19353745/19778023.aspx

Good Performer But Missing Features

I'm coming to the XPS15 from the Studio 16. I received the laptop about 2 weeks ago. The bottom line is the performance is impressive for the price, but the Studio 16 had features I miss and the performance gains do not make up for the feature gap. The main issue is the screen resolution. It seems all PC makers are pushing laptops with so-called 720P displays with a max resolution of 1366x768. That's great if you watch movies on your laptop. Unfortunately for me, I only do this on airplanes and only about once a month. What I need is a screen with some vertical depth for displaying and editing Word docs, writing code, and reading web pages. Documents are taller than they are wide, so it makes no sense to limit screen resolution offerings. I'd gladly pay for more real estate. Thanks to the squat screen resolution, I have to do a lot of scrolling. Actually, my netbook has the same screen resolution as my new XPS15. My Studio 16 had capacitive buttons that were useful. My new XPS15 has absolutely useless capacitive buttons. I don't need to mess with the Waves audio so often as to need a dedicated button. I also don't need the other two. Quick launch that doesn't launch anything useful and system settings I can change from elsewhere on the keyboard? Why?! I also miss the slot loading DVD drive. Omitting it in the new PCs is a step back IMHO. Dell chose to omit the standard VGA port, which means I can't connect to projectors to give presentations. Not sure how and why that decision was made. If I could return this laptop, I would. Unfortunately, it was issued to me and I'm stuck with it.

Disappointing Product

Reviewed in the USA on 2013-08-04T17:00:00

The XPS 15 is by far the most troublesome product I have purchased from Dell. I have had several issues in the 15 months I have owned it. First, my screen needed to be replaced because of many dead pixels. Second, a tech removed a piece a metal that didn't belong in the machine which was causing a very loud rattling noise which was thought to have been the hard drive or fan making the noise. Now I have received the 2000-0142 hard drive error which means I will have to replace the drive and reinstall the OS. The XPS 15 has given me way too many problems in the short time I have owned it. The customer service was good but perhaps I will consider a different brand next time.
